An Educator's Journey: three decades in Japan

Member Christopher Gallagher recently returned to Australia after three decades in Japan, with 25 years as a tenured academic at International Christian University (ICU) in Mitaka, Tokyo. He is an EAP (English for Academic Purposes) specialist, and experienced tutor for IELTS, an internationally recognised test used for tertiary entry and visa applications, among other things.

Chris will talk about his (and his family's) time in Japan, his career there and the changes he saw over that time, and his new status as an entrepreneur, the founder of AusSpeak Academy, an academic tutoring service targeted at Japanese students.

Please join us for some insights into the Japanese academic world and the challenges of a new business operating remotely but focused on providing English language services in Japan. There will be ample opportunity for Q&A.

BIO, CHRISTOPHER GALLAGHER

In 1988, Christopher moved to Japan from Australia to broaden his career in teaching. Despite his initial plan to stay for just a few years, he fell in love with the country and decided to call Japan home. He recently moved back to Australia after living in Japan for over 30 years.

With his sons, Callum and Rhys, both born in Tokyo and all fluent Japanese speakers, Christopher has established an ESL (English as a Second Language) tutoring service. The AusSpeak Academy's goal is to use their backgrounds in Japan and a multi-disciplinary approach to provide a fresh perspective to the study of English.
