Our next AJS Business Series will focus on recent acquisitions by Japanese companies in Australia.

The last couple of years have seen another wave of outbound Japanese investment: more than 600 cross-border deals valued at $US700 billion were done worldwide by Japanese companies in 2011, according to Thomson Reuters.

Unlike some past investments in golf courses and property, which ended in tears, these deals seem focused on core business synergies. And so are they more likely to succeed?

Our discussion will focus on recent Japanese M&A in Australia, with two eminently qualified speakers. Kevin Chamberlain, Partner at AJS corporate member KPMG, will set the scene with an overview of recent Japanese M&A activity.  He will be followed by Tatsuhiko Wada, Business Development Executive at TAL Limited (formerly Tower Australia Limited) who will comment on the experience of Dai-ichi Life’s acquisition of Tower, which began with a 28% share in 2008, followed by 100% ownership in May 2011.

Kevin Chamberlain is the Advisory lead partner for the Global Japanese Practice in Australia, and is responsible for KPMG services to Japanese clients investing in Australia.

Kevin specialises in acquisition due diligence and other buy –side support services, divestment services such as vendor due diligence and vendor assist and IPO and other capital markets support services.

Tatsuhiko Wada
, Business Development Executive at TAL Limited, is a liaison executive seconded from Dai-ichi Life since March 2009.
He has been with Dai-ichi Life for over 28 years including a four year assignment both in NYC and
Washington DC.  He has significant experience particularly in International Finance and the Corporate Pension business.
