AJS is pleased to welcome Richard Woolcott,  retired diplomat, now author and commentator, as our speaker in September.

Richard Woolcott, AC, had a distinguished career in the Australian Diplomatic Service, serving as a trusted advisor to every Prime Minister from Bob Menzies to John Howard. He held positions as Australia's ambassador to Indonesia (notably during the invasion of East Timor) and The Philippines, as well as High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ghana and Singapore. He was the Australian Ambassador to the United Nations from 1982 to 1988, and served as the President of the United Nations Security Council for Australia's term in November 1985. Woolcott also served as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), from 1988 to 1992. As DFAT Secretary, he was involved in the establishment of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

Since his retirement from the public service Mr. Woolcott has been active as a writer, commentator and advisor, particularly on Australia’s role in Asia, the topic of his address to us.
